Navigating a Dynamic Role
Meet Owen Jones, one of our dedicated Project Managers who ensures every marine engineering project is delivered safely, efficiently, and on time.
Owen’s role involves planning, executing, and overseeing the delivery of complex projects, managing multidisciplinary teams, liaising with clients and subcontractors, and ensuring every detail meets maritime standards and safety regulations.
Early Starts and Positive Routines
Owen’s workday officially begins at 8:30am, but his mornings start much earlier.
“I usually wake up at 5:30am and go for a morning run,” he shares. “It gives me a positive, proactive mindset for tackling the day ahead.”
Once in the Cardiff office, he starts with a fresh cup of coffee and a quick review of overnight emails. Twice a week every Tuesday and Thursday morning Owen attends project review meetings to assess ongoing work, resolve challenges, and plan next steps.
Collaboration at the Core
As a Project Manager, collaboration is key.
Owen works closely with departments across the company, from finance to travel and logistics. “It’s a team effort to make sure everything runs smoothly,” he explains.
“I tackle the most important tasks first, then move on to smaller items. I rely on my calendar and task list to keep me on track and make sure the team stays on the same page.”
This structured yet flexible approach helps Owen manage multiple priorities while maintaining clear communication with all stakeholders.
Recharge and Refocus
When lunchtime arrives, Owen takes full advantage of the company’s facilities.
“We’re lucky to have a fully functioning kitchen in the office,” he says. “I usually cook a quick, healthy lunch it’s a great way to reset before diving back into the afternoon.”
Finishing Strong
Before signing off for the day, Owen takes time to reflect and plan for the next day.
“At the end of the day, I review what I’ve accomplished and update my task list for tomorrow,” he says. “It keeps me organised and focused.”
After work, he swaps spreadsheets for swimming laps an evening swim at the local gym helps him unwind and recharge for the next day.
Reflections and Rewards
For Owen, continuous learning is one of the best parts of his job.
“I’m motivated by the opportunity to learn something new every day,” he explains. “Every project brings different challenges, technologies, or people to work with. It keeps the role exciting and helps me grow professionally.”
One of Owen’s proudest achievements was delivering a complex vessel retrofit on time and within budget, despite unexpected challenges a true testament to his leadership and problem-solving skills.
Advice for Aspiring Project Managers
“If someone were considering a job like mine,” Owen says, “I’d tell them that no two days are ever the same, which keeps things exciting. It’s challenging, but if you enjoy problem-solving, leading teams, and seeing tangible results, it’s incredibly rewarding.”
“It’s also a great opportunity to travel and work with multi-disciplined professionals.”
